Marina Bay Sands has begun construction on an $8 billion expansion project that executives call a “tourism gamechanger” for Singapore. The resort, owned and operated by Las Vegas Sands, will add a fourth hotel tower and a 15,000-seat sports and entertainment arena.

At Tuesday’s groundbreaking ceremony, key figures in the Sands organization attended, including majority shareholder Dr. Miriam Adelson, widow of company founder Sheldon Adelson; Sands President and COO Patrick Dumont; and CEO Rob Goldstein.

The highlight of the expansion is a 55-story standalone hotel tower south of the existing three towers connected by the iconic SkyPark. The new tower will feature 570 luxury suites and a 76,000-square-foot “Skyloop” with restaurants, gardens, infinity pools, and both private and public spaces.

Other additions include luxury retail boutiques, a holistic spa, 200,000 square feet of MICE facilities, and expanded casino space. The new arena, designed by Populous—the firm behind the Las Vegas Sphere and London’s O2 Arena—will host sports, concerts, and large-scale events.

Years in the Making

Plans for the expansion date back to April 2019, when Las Vegas Sands secured an extension of its Singapore gaming license through 2030 and pledged $3.3 billion for new development. The COVID-19 pandemic delayed progress, while the passing of Sheldon Adelson in January 2021 marked a significant transition for the company. The project now carries a price tag nearly $4.7 billion higher than originally projected.

“Marina Bay Sands is the world’s most successful integrated resort and the gold standard in the industry,” said Goldstein. “This development will continue Mr. Adelson’s vision and set a new benchmark for luxury tourism in Singapore.”

Singapore at the Center

Las Vegas Sands no longer operates any US casinos, having sold The Venetian and Palazzo in Las Vegas in 2021 for $6.25 billion and exiting its Pennsylvania property in 2018. While the company briefly explored a bid for a New York casino license, it withdrew earlier this year.

Today, Sands is focused on its integrated resorts in Macau and Singapore, with Marina Bay Sands serving as a cornerstone of its long-term strategy.
